The clutch release bearing, also known as the clutch throwout bearing, is a key component in a manual transmission vehicle that is installed between the clutch and the transmission, between the pressure plate and the first shaft of the transmission. It is connected to the clutch pedal through a series of mechanical structures, and its main function is to push the release fork when the driver operates the clutch pedal, causing the pressure plate to move backward, thus disengaging the clutch and permitting a gearshift operation.

Clutch release bearing working principle

1. Engaged state: In normal driving, the clutch is in the engaged state, the release bearing is kept in the non-operating position by the return spring, keeping a certain distance from the pressure plate. At this time, the clutch disc is close to the flywheel, transmitting the engine power to the gearbox.

2. Separation process:

   - When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the pedal pushes the release bearing through a series of connecting rods and hydraulic or mechanical systems.

   - The release bearing moves forward and presses against the release fork.

   - The fork is pushed by the release bearing and rotates around its pivot point, pushing the clutch pressure plate back.

   - As the pressure plate moves back, the spring force is overcome, the pressure between the pressure plate and the clutch disc decreases, the connection between the clutch disc and the flywheel and transmission input shaft is broken, and power transmission is interrupted.

3. Return and clearance:

   - When the driver releases the clutch pedal, the release bearing is returned to its original position by means of a return spring, which maintains a certain amount of free play with the release lever to avoid wear and overheating caused by continuous pressure.

   - This return mechanism ensures that the clutch is engaged when not in use, maintaining the power connection between the engine and the transmission.

4. Automatic alignment and lubrication:

   - Modern designs of release bearings may incorporate self-aligning construction to ensure even pressure on the release finger even when not concentric, reducing wear.

   - Some bearings are fully sealed and filled with high temperature grease to reduce maintenance requirements and increase durability.

- CONSTRUCTION: A clutch release bearing is a compact device consisting of several basic elements, the main components of which are the outer ring, the inner ring, the rolling elements (balls or rollers), the cage and the contact surfaces.

- MATERIALS:

  - The outer and inner rings are usually made of high-grade steel to ensure strength and wear resistance.

  - Rolling elements are usually made of chrome or stainless steel to provide excellent hardness and corrosion resistance.

  - Cages are usually made of synthetic materials such as nylon or polyamide to take advantage of their low friction and self-lubricating properties.

  - The contact surfaces are coated with a layer of high temperature grease to reduce friction and wear.

- Function: The clutch release bearing plays a vital role in the engagement and disengagement of the clutch. It allows for smooth shifting and facilitates the transfer of power from the engine to the transmission.

- Performance requirements: Clutch release bearings are subjected to high levels of stress and heat during operation. Therefore, they are manufactured with durable materials that can withstand these harsh conditions.

- Maintenance: To ensure optimum performance and longevity of the clutch release bearing, regular maintenance is required. This includes checking lubrication, adjusting freewheeling travel and replacing damaged bearings.

Importance of the clutch release bearing

The efficiency of the release bearing has a direct impact on the clutch release effect, which in turn affects the smoothness of the gearshift and the drivability of the vehicle. If the release bearing is damaged, such as severe wear or insufficient lubrication, it will lead to incomplete clutch disengagement, difficulty in shifting gears, or even generate abnormal noise, affecting driving safety and comfort.
