When should I replace my clutch throw out bearing?

A clutch throw-out bearing, often referred to as a Clutch Release Bearing or Throw out Bearing, is an important component in the clutch system of a manual transmission vehicle. It is located between the mechanical or hydraulic operating mechanism of the clutch pressure plate and the clutch pedal, and is used to reduce friction during clutch engagement and disengagement to ensure smooth clutch operation.

How the clutch throwout bearing works

When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the release bearing is pushed forward through a series of mechanical connections (e.g. push rod, release fork, etc.), an action that presses on the release lever, which in turn reduces the pressure of the pressure plate on the slave disc, permitting the separation between the slave disc and the flywheel, thus interrupting the transmission of power from the engine to the gearbox, and making it possible to shift gears. During this process, the release bearing acts to transmit the release force and ensures that the clutch can be smoothly disengaged.

Lubrication and friction reduction: The clutch release bearing is usually filled with grease to reduce the friction and wear that occurs during clutch operation.

Transmitting Force: When the clutch pedal is depressed, the release bearing pushes the clutch pressure plate, separating it from the clutch disc, thus interrupting the power connection between the engine and the transmission.

Return: When the clutch pedal is released, the release bearing will quickly return to its original position under the action of the return spring, ready for the next clutch operation.

 Clutch throwout bearing function

1. Reduces wear: Extends the service life of the clutch system by lubricating and reducing friction.

2. Ensure smooth operation: Ensure that the clutch can be engaged and disengaged smoothly and without any obstruction, so as to improve driving comfort and safety.

3. Transmits power: interrupts the power connection by pushing the clutch pressure plate when the clutch is disengaged, enabling gear shifting or stopping.

4. Protection mechanism: Helps to protect the clutch system from excessive impact force and prolongs the life of the entire clutch system.

When to replace the clutch throwout bearing?

1. Abnormal Noise: If you hear a noticeable noise, such as a sharp whistling or grinding sound, when depressing or releasing the clutch pedal, this may be a sign that the release bearing is worn out.

2. Difficulty in shifting gears: If shifting becomes hard or there is a stuttering sensation, this may be due to damage to the release bearing affecting the normal disengagement of the clutch.

3. Pedal Vibration: Abnormal vibration of the clutch pedal during operation may also be a release bearing problem.

4. Heavy clutch pedal: If more force is required to depress the clutch, it may be due to increased release bearing resistance.

Normally, the timing of clutch release bearing replacement depends on its condition of use and degree of wear. Below are some suggested timing for replacement:

5. Vehicle mileage: Although the exact replacement mileage varies depending on the vehicle model and conditions of use, generally speaking, the wear of the release bearing will gradually increase as the vehicle mileage increases. It is recommended that the condition of the release bearing be checked regularly and replaced as needed. Normally, the clutch three-piece set (including release bearing, friction disc and pressure plate) needs to be replaced after about 100,000 kilometres of driving, but the exact timing of replacement also depends on the owner's driving habits and wear and tear of the parts.

When any of the above symptoms occur, inspection and possible replacement of the clutch throwout bearing should be considered. Due to the harsh conditions in which it operates, a release bearing replacement is also usually recommended when replacing the clutch disc or pressure plate to ensure optimal performance and longevity of the entire clutch system. Specialist repairs are the preferred option for replacing such parts to ensure correct installation and avoid further damage.

In summary, the clutch release bearing is an integral part of the clutch system and its proper functioning is important to ensure safe vehicle operation and drivability. During the use of the vehicle, the condition of the clutch release bearing should be checked regularly and replaced or repaired as necessary.
