Typically, a throwout bearing is found in manual transmissions and clutch assemblies.

A manual automobile transmission requires the driver to shift gears manually by operating the clutch and shift lever/stick with their hands and feet, respectively.

The transmission’s primary function is to allow your engine to run at various speeds while providing smooth acceleration by connecting it to the vehicle’s wheels via various gearsets. Without it, your car would be immobile!

A modern manual transmission is comprised of numerous components, one of which is referred to as the throwout bearing.

What Is the Function of Hydraulic Throwout Bearings?

To comprehend how a hydraulic throwout bearing works, it’s necessary to have a firm grasp on how clutches work in general.

A clutch is a device that utilizes friction to engage and disengage power transmission between two rotating shafts.

With manual transmissions, the clutch pedal activates the pressure plate by pressing it into the flywheel’s center, causing friction between them and transferring power from one rotating shaft to another.

When you depress the clutch pedal, the hydraulic throwout bearing assists in this process by releasing the pressure plate.

To accomplish this, your throwout bearing must be free to move along its long axis, as it operates via a lever that pushes it against your clutch to disengage it.

Throwout bearings are typically constructed of plastic or metal and are also referred to as release bearings due to their use in manual transmissions and clutch systems.

 Why is a hydraulic throwout bearing superior to a mechanical throwout bearing?

Adjustment of hydraulic throwout bearings is not required. Each time you depress the clutch pedal, the transmission and clutch disc are completely disengaged.

A hydraulic throwout bearing has a lower chance of sticking than a cable.

When using a cable, it can become clogged over time, resulting in difficulty disengaging the clutch plate from the flywheel.

Due to the self-adjusting nature of hydraulic throwout bearings, they are less likely to fail or break down over time.

It contains no moving parts that will wear out or require maintenance.

It’s quieter because there is no back and forth chattering of a cable on its housing when the clutch pedal is released.

This is especially important if you’re street driving, as this would be inconvenient for any passengers in your vehicle, as well as for any passing pedestrians.

How to Replace a Hydraulic Throwout Bearing and Adjust It?

The steps below will walk you through replacing a hydraulic throwout bearing.

Connect the hydraulic line to the valve.

This is accomplished by loosening the clamp that secures it to the metal tubing and unscrewing it from the transmission’s ball fitting.

Remove the release fork carefully, being careful not to damage any other components or to get grease on your clothing or nearby surfaces.

Remove the old throwout bearing; this step requires the use of a screwdriver or socket wrench (depending on what your particular clutch system requires).

Replace the throwout bearing and secure it with a screw or nut (if necessary).

Install the release fork and check that all tabs are properly aligned to avoid them becoming bent during use.

Reattach this part using bolts and nuts if necessary, then set aside until all other tasks are completed before reconnecting any other items that were disconnected previously, such as cables, wires, hoses, etcetera etcetera…

What is the proper way to install a hydraulic throwout bearing?

On the transmission, install the hydraulic slave cylinder. Install the clutch release bearing in the bellhousing on the shaft. Align the clutch pressure plate’s dowel pins with the flywheel’s. All bolts should be torqued to 18 foot-pounds in the following order:

top right, middle right, bottom right, top left, and so on. Align the dowel pin of the new clutch disc with the flywheel’s dowel pin. Reduce it to 18 foot-pounds torque and then remove it.

Grease both sides of each friction disc surface liberally, reinstall them, and torque them to 18 foot-pounds.

This is primarily to lubricate these surfaces, as they will not come into contact with gear oil until you break in your new clutch kit and convert it from dry friction discs to wet discs with lubricant for cooler operation.

Expose any non-greased surfaces by rotating one disc upwards and then downwards until both sides are coated with grease;

repeat this procedure a couple of times more to ensure both sides are adequately coated with grease;

then inspect everything thoroughly before wiping away any excess grease with rags or other suitable materials that can withstand high temperatures without causing damage or catching fire.

Before reinstalling anything else, ensure that all components are torqued properly.

For manual transmission and clutch systems, the throwout bearing is critical. Replacement can be accomplished by those who are proficient with tools.

This means that the device contains no moving parts other than oil; it operates by transferring pressure from one side to the other via oil.

By pressing on one end of the cylinder, you apply pressure to the oil inside, which activates an external piston arm connected to the clutch fork lever and pushing against the clutch disk at the other end of the arm.

When you depress your clutch pedal, you’re applying pressure to two different pistons: the master cylinder (located beneath your brake pedal), which acts on the brake fluid in the brake lines leading to your brakes, and a rod connected to your slave cylinder.
