 1. Definition and Location

- Clutch throwout bearing: It is a key component in the manual transmission system, located between the clutch pressure plate and the flywheel, and is mounted at the end of the clutch fork. Its main function is to push the pressure plate away from the friction plate on the flywheel when the clutch pedal is pressed down, interrupting the transmission of power from the engine to the gearbox and allowing the gearshift operation.

- Clutch Release Fork (Clutch Fork): As part of the clutch operating mechanism, it is usually mounted on the relevant parts of the transmission, and the structure includes the fork arm and the connecting part. Its main function is to push or pull the clutch release bearing by moving it, which in turn causes the clutch pressure plate to separate or engage with the clutch plate.

 2. Function and working principle

- Function of the clutch release fork:

  - When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the clutch release fork receives the force from the pedal mechanism and transmits it to the clutch release bearing to disengage the clutch.

  - The fork arm is used to make contact with the clutch release bearing to ensure that the force is transmitted accurately.  

- Function of the clutch release bearing:

  - When pushed by the clutch release fork, the clutch release bearing compresses the spring of the clutch pressure plate, separating the pressure plate from the clutch disc and disconnecting the power connection.

  - The release bearing also serves as a support and guide to ensure that the clutch release fork can accurately push the pressure plate to separate, reducing friction and wear and ensuring smooth operation.

  - Co-operative Principle of Operation:

  - When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the clutch release fork and release bearing begin to work together. When the driver depresses the clutch pedal, the release fork and release bearing start to work together. The release fork pushes the release bearing, which in turn pushes the clutch pressure plate to separate the clutch plate from the flywheel, thus interrupting the power transmission between the engine and the transmission.

  - When the driver releases the clutch pedal, the return spring pushes the release bearing and the release fork back to the initial position, so that the clutch pressure plate re-engages with the clutch disc and power transmission resumes.

- Mechanical Release Bearing: Transmits force directly through the clutch fork, which is more traditional and relies on mechanical connection.

- Hydraulic Release Bearing: Transmits force through the hydraulic system, which reduces friction and improves accuracy. More common in modern vehicles, usually working with hydraulic master and slave cylinders, simplifying the mechanical structure and improving reliability.

 4. Construction and materials

- Clutch release bearing:

  - Shell: usually made of steel or aluminum, responsible for bearing external loads and providing protection.

  - Rolling elements: Ball or cylindrical roller bearings are used to reduce friction and extend service life.

  - Inner ring: in direct contact with the clutch fork, usually made of hardened steel, takes the pressure from the fork.

  - Outer ring: in direct contact with the pressure plate, made of wear-resistant material to reduce friction.

  - Lubrication system: equipped with lubricating oil or grease to reduce friction and maintain efficient operation.  

- Clutch Release Fork:

  - Usually made of high-strength steel to ensure that it can withstand high forces and maintain sufficient rigidity.

  - The structure includes a fork arm, a fork rod and a connecting part. The fork arm is used to make contact with the clutch release bearing and the fork rod is used to connect with the pedal mechanism.

 5. Common Problems and Failures

- Wear and tear: After prolonged use, the release bearing may wear out, resulting in incomplete or delayed clutch release, affecting smooth gear shifting and possibly leading to unstable connection between the engine and transmission.

- Noise: If the bearing fails or is not adequately lubricated, a sharp “squeaking” or “clicking” sound may be produced.

- Sticking: If the rolling element of the release bearing is damaged or if there is a foreign object stuck in it, it may cause the bearing to stick and not move smoothly, resulting in the clutch not being able to fully disengage.

- Damaged oil seals: Damaged oil seals can lead to lubricant leakage, increasing friction and shortening bearing life.

- Abnormal clutch pedal feel: If it is too hard or too soft, it may be due to the problem of release bearing or release fork.

 6. Replacement and Maintenance

- Replacement: When the release bearing or release fork is worn or malfunctions, it is usually necessary to replace the entire assembly. Since the release bearing is located in the clutch assembly, it is usually necessary to disassemble the clutch section in order to replace it.

- INSPECTION: Periodically inspect the release bearing and release fork for signs of noise, sticking or excessive friction. Early inspection and repair is recommended to prevent the normal function of the clutch from being affected.

- Lubrication: Ensuring that the release bearing is properly lubricated will prolong its life. As a rule, clutch systems are fitted with an oil seal and lubrication system and the bearing should be kept lubricated throughout its service life.

- The release fork and the release bearing are the two key components of the clutch system, which work together to realize the release and engagement functions of the clutch.
